The Role of High School Teacher 

Yiyili Aboriginal Independent Community School now has a rewarding opportunity for a full-time High School Teacher to join their school in Yiyili Community, Mueller Ranges, WA. 

This role will see you responsible for the planning, development and implementation of the Australian Curriculum for a class of Year 7-10 students, within the whole school approach to teaching. The school uses Teaching With Intent (formally Accelerated Literacy) as its main approach to teaching literacy, in which training will be provided. 

Some of your key duties will include (but will not be limited to): 

  • Selecting, modifying and developing curricula and teaching materials for use, in co-operation with the community, Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal school staff; 
  • Providing professional support for Aboriginal staff and developing an effective team teaching approach to the delivery of curriculum content; 
  • Running hands-on learning programs such as school café, garden project and bike repair workshop that embed literacy and numeracy learning while prepare high school students for work; 
  • Providing effective on-going evaluation of teaching and learning approaches as well as individual student progress as directed by the Principal and School Board; 
  • Working effectively with other teaching staff to maintain a positive, whole school approach to behaviour management; 
  • Using the AITSL Australian professional standards for teachers to identify on-going professional learning needs and recommending to the Principal and school staff appropriate measures for maintaining a high level of professional competence in the delivery of both primary and secondary programs.  

    Are you the right fit? 

    The successful candidate will be a qualified Primary and/or High School Teacher, with WA Teacher Registration (or ability to obtain). Graduates are welcome to apply, however any experience working in a remote environment and/or with EAL/D/overseas students will be highly regarded.

    Importantly, you will be committed to closing the gap in Aboriginal education and will bring flexibility to different learning tasks to ensure all students reap the full benefits of the classroom. 

    The school High School teacher works alongside Aboriginal Education Workers to teach Literacy and Numeracy alongside hands-on activities such as coffee making, bike repairs and garden project. 

    Although not a requirement, any experience in positive behaviour management and/or the willingness to develop a further understanding of the impacts of trauma will be highly regarded.

    About Yiyili Aboriginal Independent Community School 

    Yiyili Aboriginal Independent Community School is an independent school catering for students from Kindergarten to Year 10. It is governed by a school board consisting of members from the local communities and has four multi-age classrooms. 

    The school has a current enrolment of 55 students and is fortunate to have excellent facilities including a covered basketball court, full commercial grade kitchen, a dedicated Gooniyandi language room and music studio space studio gallery. All classrooms are well equipped to service the learning needs of students and have interactive whiteboards as well as class sets of iPads. 

    The community priorities include for students to be 3-way strong in language (standard Australian English, Kimberley Kriol, Gooniyandi), maths skills (money skills), and culture and learning.
